![]() “The Church Cultivating the Christ in Christians” The New Mount Zion Baptist Church, founded in 1918, has the distinction of having only three pastors; each blessed with outstanding greatness in his own right. The Reverend William A. Campbell established the Little Mount Zion Baptist Church with a few members; organizing the Deacon and Trustee Boards, Sunday school, Senior Choir and the Usher Board. As membership grew, the original building was demolished and rebuilt in 1929. In 1934, the church was renamed, the New Mount Zion Baptist Church. Upon Rev. Campbell’s death in 1958, Reverend Dr. Edward L. Satchel of the famous 19th Street Baptist Church in Philadelphia, PA was called to Pastor the church. He was a dynamic orator and passionate preacher of the gospel. Under his direction, the church blossomed. He established a youth scholarship fund, purchased a church parsonage and organized the first cluster of credit unions in the Harlem area. His wife, Mrs. Irene Satchel, focused her attention on teaching music to young people and organizing a Junior and Celestial Choir. After Rev. Satchel’s retirement in 1994 the Reverend Dr. Carl L. Washington, Jr of Baltimore, MD was called to be the church’s third pastor on January 26th 1995. Rev. Washington’s dynamic teaching and preaching style has inspired the church’s growth with over 300 members in his first year. In the last 10 years the Church has revitalized and established several dedicated ministries that currently serve the community; Boundaries, Community Outreach, Eagles, Willing Worker advocates for Senior Citizens, Zion Silver Leaf Bereavement and Youth services. The Church also established good -work ministries such as Men’s Fellowship and Women’s Alliance and a Faith Bible Institute educational program that offers a degree in Bible Studies. New Mt. Zion has held worship services in the Park and organized health fairs in the neighborhood. Rev. Washington’s wife, Sister Bernita K. Washington, serves as Christian Education Director and has developed a membership manual and spearheads the yearly Church Wide Institute. Under Rev. Washington’s direction, the upper and lower sanctuaries were completely renovated; a media room and a wheel-chair accessible ramp were installed. As we look towards 100 years of worship; building from Little New Mt. Zion Baptist Church to the New Mount Zion Baptist Church, we accept the call to stand and serve the community and Cultivate the Christ in Christians. |
