The Church Cultivating the Christ in Christians

Reverend Dr. Carl L. Washington, Jr., grew up in a Baptist household under the tutelage of his parents Rev. Dr. Carl L. and Dr. Minnie R. Washington, Sr. who for 50 years served as Pastor and leading lady of the Saint Timothy Baptist Church in Baltimore, MD. He is a magnum cum laude graduate of LaSalle University where he served as Adjunct Professor and, a graduate of Hartford Theological Seminary. He received a Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Virginia at Lynchburg and a Doctorate of Ministry from Eastern Theological Seminary.

Rev. Washington has served as the Pastor of the New Mount Zion Baptist Church in Harlem, New York since 1995. Under his leadership, the congregation grew from less than 100 people to over 500. He attributed the growth to their willingness to become disciples. Between 1995 and 2009, he led the revitalization of the entire church without incurring debt; reconstructing the upper sanctuary and lower fellowship hall.

Rev. Washington’s personal philosophy governs his administrative style. He believes that, you cannot out-give God. In keeping with this philosophy, his administration has created new ministries such as Men’s Fellowship, Woman’s Alliance, Intercessory Prayer, Praise Team, Community Outreach, Boundaries and the Eagle’s ministries, establishing a pathway between the church and the community. He led the efforts to start a media ministry and oversaw the development of a website and high level audio and video quality.

Rev. Washington is an active member of the Harlem community and an esteemed advisor to local politicians in regards to community affairs. He is an avid Civil Rights Activist heralding the fight against racism, sexism and all civil rights. He commits his time and resources to community projects such as health initiative, senior care, youth outreach and conduct services for and administer food and clothing to the homeless. He is also a Chaplain for New York State, and counseled at drug and alcohol treatment centers. Rev. Washington has even held morning worship services in the community park.

This preeminent leader of the Baptist community serves as President of the Empire State Convention Congress of Christian Education, Youth Director for the New England Baptist Convention (The Oldest Black Convention in America), Board Member for the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education, the First Vice Moderator of the United Missionary Baptist Association, Board Member of C.O.P.W.A. (Children of Parents with AIDS), NBLCA (National Black Leadership Commission On Aids), as Chaplain with membership to the United Chaplains, State of New York.

Rev. Washington travels across the United States with his uniquely powerful preaching, lecturing, teaching, encouraging and strengthening the faith of people. He is sought after because of his genuine love for the work of ministry and his ability to translate the message of Christian growth and Biblical development to congregations.

Rev. Washington has authored the book, “Divine Directives for the Dysfunctional Church” and is currently working on “The Judas Curse” (A Guide for 21st Century Finance Ministry) and “Yours, Mine and Ours a Christian View of the Blended Family”.

His greatest success and satisfaction has come as the husband of the gracious and beautiful Bernita K. Washington and the father of their five children – daughters Carla (Estaban), Chandle and Caura and sons Carl III (Keisha) and Carson. In addition, he has nine beautiful grandchildren.

Rev. Washington’s faith extends far beyond the walls and hearts of the church; his ministry reaches across New York State, as well as, across this nation, carrying the word of God in his heart and the cause of Christianity as his purpose.
